What should I do after an accident?

Immediately after you have been involved in an accident, you should first make sure that everyone involved is safe. If the accident was serious or there are injuries involved, you should call the police immediately. You should also exchange contact information with the other involved parties, including insurance and driver license information. If there is property damage to your vehicle, you should also contact your insurance agency and notify them of the accident.

What if I believe I'm at fault?

If you believe you are at fault in the accident, it is important to never make an admission of guilt or admit responsibility. Incriminating statements such as “I’m sorry, it was my fault” can later be used against you in court. A determination of who was at fault in the accident can be made later, after a thorough investigation of the incident by police, the insurance companies and your attorney.

What if the other driver is uninsured or underinsured?

It can be difficult to obtain financial compensation from an uninsured or underinsured driver who is at fault in an accident. In some cases, the personal assets of the at-fault party can be used to pay for damages. Or, if the uninsured driver is a dependent of another policy holder, it may be possible to seek compensation from that individual's insurance policy.

What financial compensation can I obtain?

People involved in automobile accidents may be able to obtain compensation for damage to their vehicles, medical costs, loss of wages, pain and suffering and other damages. In some states with “no-fault” insurance laws, your medical bills and lost wages will be covered by your insurance company, regardless of who was at fault.

Should I hire a lawyer?

An experienced, knowledgeable personal injury attorney can help you earn the financial compensation you deserve after an automobile accident. We have relationships with investigators, accident reconstructionists and other professionals who can help us build a case for financial damages. Hiring a lawyer to represent you can mean the difference between earning a large financial settlement and getting no settlement at all.

How much does a lawyer cost?

At Fitts Zehl LLP, we handle all automobile accident cases on a contingency-fee basis. That means you pay nothing at the time we take your case and only pay legal fees if we obtain a financial judgment in your case. Our attorneys will be paid based on a percentage of the amount we recover for you. If we do not get you a financial award, you do not pay us a dime.
